Uganda Nursing School Bwindi opened in 2013 as the only advanced-level program in a rural region of one million people.
Before
Before Uganda Nursing School Bwindi (UNSB) existed, this area of Uganda had only one registered nurse to serve 40,000 people. Compare this to the U.S., where there are, on average, more than 350 registered nurses to serve 40,000 people.
Now

- Purchased a 40-seat school bus and extended water and power availability to the school
- Launched an ultrasound training program in partnership with University of Vermont and Imaging the World Africa, the first of its kind in the region
- Achieved the outstanding result of 100% of students passing rigorous national nursing exams for the second year in a row
- 2 full-time Ugandan instructors lead the teaching and 16 Bwindi Community Hospital staff members teach part time in their specialty areas
- Provided iPads and interactive whiteboards
The Future
Your partnership is needed to ensure that the school can continue to overcome challenges and improve student services, such as web access and transportation. In addition, most students at UNSB come from lower-income families, so scholarships and financial support are crucial. Many more students are eligible for scholarships should funds become available.
Programs
Diploma in Nursing (Direct entry)—3 years
Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery (Extension)—18 months
Certificate in Nursing or Midwifery (Direct entry)—2.5 years
Certificate in Family Planning—duration varies
